SmartLIFE – innovative approaches to sustainable construction

"Smart Lifestyle Innovations for our Environment" (SmartLIFE) is the name of the innovative pilot project, in which three European partners joined. Cambridge in Great Britain, Malmö in Sweden and Hamburg face similar, growth rate-induced challenges in their construction industries. They jointly aim for affordable, sustainable construction, to protect the environmental and safeguard quality of life.
In their countries, these partners are currently setting up centres for sustainable innovative construction. In these centres the use of solar technologies and construction of zero-energy houses is demonstrated. Another important issue are the challenges the construction industry faces in view of the demographic development of the population.
Public relations work ensures that progress, accomplished in this collaboration, is reflected in the daily work. The marketing addresses students and teachers at vocational schools, politicians, planners, but also private house owners. By doing so, traditional techniques shall gradually be replaced by "SmartLIFE" methods. Through seminars, information events, collection of material and databases everybody active in the construction business shall be trained.
SmartLIFE – what are our goals?
- We want to develop leading-edge professional education for sustainable and innovative methods of construction in Germany, Sweden and Great Britain.
- We want to set up a programme of training seminars on contemporary, sustainable construction and offer this locally to people and construction companies.
- We want to exchange experiences made by people that undertook construction autonomously in the three partner-countries.
- We want to combine the experiences of the partners in order to optimize continued professional education and methods of construction and development.
In Hamburg, four national partners cooperate, to put European objectives into action.
- Ausbildungszentrum- Bau in Hamburg GmbH (training centre for construction in Hamburg)
- Staatliche Gewerbeschule für Bautechnik G19 (state school for the construction trade)
- Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), Bereich "Angewandte Bautechnik" (Hamburg-Harburg Technical University, department of applied construction)
In the scope of this project the Hamburg partners will
- Increase public awareness of sustainable construction
- create a network of professionals
- reinforce the knowledge on sustainable construction of all parties involved in construction and look to schools to ensure a high level of qualification
SmartLIFE is financed by he EU-North Sea programme "INTERREG III B", which promotes collaboration between the regions bordering the North Sea.
